Samsung Galaxy Tab S in the test: Sharper than the iPad – but even better? – STERN.DE

D as iPad is still the king of tablets. 27 percent of all hip flasks come from Apple, Samsung with 17.2 percent market share but still lagging far behind. That is about to change: With plenty of spectacle Samsung has introduced in June, the two new Galaxy Tab S models in New York. The presentation took place at Madison Square Garden, the most famous arena in the world – a clear challenge to Apple. The Galaxy Tab S comes in two versions, 8.4 and 10.5-inch diagonal screen. We have tested both models.

The Pixel King

The Tab S models, Samsung is fully on the super-sharp AMOLED screen. Even when you first turn you get to see on the colorful lock screen all the colorfulness of the S Tab. According to Samsung, the tablet can have a 20 percent greater color gamut display than the competition. The screen of our two test devices has no color cast. The resolution is 2560 x 1600 pixels, the pixel density is 359 ppi (pixels per inch). A peak! Especially photographers and film fans will have their joy at Tab S

The small Galaxy Tab S measures 126 x 213 x 6.6 mm -. Thus it is one of the most compact tablets on the market. With 294 grams, it is also lighter than the iPad Mini with Retina display. However, there is the Apple tablet made of high quality aluminum, while Samsung uses plastic. And the golf ball look on the back might not be to everyone’s taste. At the processing, there is nothing to complain about, the Tab S acts stable and the buttons are firmly attached. The smaller Tab S has been optimized for use in portrait orientation, the large model should be held in landscape mode.

this country available version of the Tab S has 16 gigabytes, the pre-installed software is almost five gigabytes. The microSD slot allows the memory scarcely measured up to 128 gigabytes expand – so there should even Serienjunkies get through a two-week vacation without withdrawal symptoms. With the computing power the Galaxy Tab S is according to some benchmarks on par with the iPad Air, which is so far disappointing as Samsung built an eight-core processor in the S Tab. In addition, some 3D games juddered (such as “Riptide GP2″) in our test. Also when you start the iPad Mini retina nose had always forward. It is possible that here an update soon will help.

Up to twelve hours of battery life

The rear camera snaps pictures with eight megapixels in 4:3 ratio in 16:9 mode are still six megapixels available. However, an optical image stabilizer is missing. In daylight the shots are good in low light conditions, however, only average. Also, the flash then saves not much

Depending on the intensity of use of the battery lasts (4900 mAh capacity) between nine and twelve hours -. Enough for the entire “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Charging, however, takes too long: Only after almost five hours our loading bar was back to 100 percent

A feature of the Galaxy S5 has made it in the tab. S: the fingerprint scanner. He is in the home button and works quite reliably. Practically, the scanner when multiple users share a tablet. With Apple’s iPad one looks familiar from the iPhone 5S feature so far in vain

. Conclusion: Samsung’s Tablet Highlights

The two tab-S models are the best Android Tablets. The screen is brilliant and the devices are extremely thin and light. With less than 300 grams, the 8.4 is hardly noticeable even in your pocket. We did better like the smaller model in the test, because it can hold comfortably with one hand, also the vertical format for many applications such as the browser more practical.

With 399 euros for the Wifi and 499 euros for the LTE variant of Samsung’s 8.4-inch tablet but not cheaper than the iPad Mini. Those who value stylish design and the iOS operating system, should pick up the apple. If, however, a larger display and the low weight preferred, it should pick up the tab S. Otherwise, the tablet does not take much.
