Samsung Galaxy Note 4: Sensors for measuring oxygen content in blood and UV intensity
Smartphones have become established in recent years in our everyday lives. Meanwhile, some models are even able to collect data about our bodies. Besides pedometer (step counter) and heart rate monitor, Samsung has the newest offshoot of its phablet series now even appropriate Sensors to measure the UV intensity of light and the oxygen content in the blood donated. In addition, the S Health-app reworked and now shines on the Galaxy Note 4 in a fresh new look with new features.
With the Galaxy S4 Samsung has its first time integrates a pedometer in one of its smartphones and since then drilled his S3 introduced with the Galaxy S Health application immensely. After the Galaxy S5 a heart rate monitor could debut in the smartphone, the sensor of a few days ago only presented Galaxy Note 4 has been extended once again. The phablet is able to measure the UV intensity of light and the oxygen content in the blood.
The technology required for this is once again find below the camera. These include first and foremost a prepared photo sensor: To measure the UV intensity, the smartphone with the back up for a few seconds must be held to the light. The photo sensor can then make a relatively accurate indication of the concentration of ultraviolet light.
When detecting the oxygen content in the blood is the Photo sensor is also used; the method is called pulse oximetry. Here, the finger is placed on the sensor, which then analyzes the by radiant light and assuming the oxygen content can be calculated. In medicine, this invasive measurement method is indeed common, but there is carried out in a more complex apparatus. Accordingly, it is questionable whether it is Samsung managed professionally to integrate this method in the narrow smartphone.
The data is of course as well as manually entered information on nutrition, weight and sleep logs of the S Health App. The application was meanwhile slightly revised and renewed in design. There is a new overview page, the oxygen content, UV-irradiation, steps and the like is prepared.
What do you think? Sensor overkill or UV-light sensors and the measurement of the oxygen content in the blood for certain applications make sense? Your opinion in the comments.
